Long Island Duck Farm Forced to Euthanize 100,000 Flock Due to Bird Flu Outbreak

Health

Crescent Duck Farm, the last remaining commercial duck farm on Long Island, New York, is in the process of euthanizing over 100,000 ducks after a bird flu outbreak was detected. The farm, which first noticed signs of illness in its flock last week, confirmed the presence of avian influenza following testing on January 17, 2025.

Health officials have ordered the farm to cease operations as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the disease. The euthanasia of the affected ducks is expected to take slightly more than a week to complete. This action follows standard protocol for controlling outbreaks of avian influenza in commercial poultry farms.

Bird flu outbreaks have been a growing concern across the U.S., leading to mass culling of infected poultry to prevent further transmission. This incident marks a significant blow to the local farming industry, as Crescent Duck Farm was the sole commercial duck producer remaining on Long Island.
