The European Energy Exchange (EEX) published today its revised 2019 calendar as well as the 2020 calendar for the auctions of general allowances in its capacity as Common Auction Platform.

The volumes of general allowances are based on Articles 10(1) of the ETS Directive taking into account the volumes withheld from auctioning pursuant to Articles 10c and 27 of that Directive, as confirmed by the Member States concerned. As previously announced, for 2020 Poland will auction 49.52 million allowances not used under the derogation in Article 10c of the Directive.

Auction volumes in the previously published 2019 auction calendar reflected the operation of the Market Stability Reserve (MSR) in the period from 1 January 2019 to 31 August 2019. Following the publication by the Commission on 15 May 2019 of the total number of allowances in circulation in 2018, auction volumes from 1 September 2019 until 31 August 2020 are now reduced by 397 178 358 allowances, which are placed in the MSR. This reduction is reflected in both, the revised 2019 and the 2020 auction calendars.

The volumes to be auctioned in 2020 also include 50 million allowances, which will be auctioned on the Common Auction Platform, so as to enable a timely start of the Innovation Fund. The 2020 calendars also take into account the share of the auction volume of the EEA EFTA states for the calendar years 2013-2018, which was not auctioned in 2019.
