Sokoto State, Nigeria — August 18, 2025

More than 40 people are missing following a tragic boat accident in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto State, according to the country’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The vessel, which was carrying approximately 50 passengers en route to the Goronyo market—a well-known food produce hub—capsized early Sunday morning.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Emergency responders have confirmed that 10 individuals were rescued from the scene, while over 40 remain unaccounted for. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with NEMA coordinating efforts alongside local authorities and community volunteers.

Zubaidar Umar, head of NEMA, stated via social media that the agency is “working tirelessly to locate the missing persons and provide support to affected families”.

Recurring Maritime Risks

Boat accidents are a frequent hazard on Nigeria’s under-regulated waterways, particularly during the rainy season when rivers and lakes overflow. Overcrowding and poor vessel maintenance are common contributing factors.

This incident follows a series of similar tragedies in recent months:

  • In July 2025, at least 13 people died when a boat carrying around 100 passengers capsized in Niger State.
  • In August 2024, 16 farmers drowned in Sokoto State while crossing a river to reach their rice fields.
  • On July 29, 2024, six girls lost their lives in Jigawa State when their boat overturned midstream.

Community Impact

The Goronyo market serves as a vital economic center for surrounding rural communities. Many of the passengers aboard the ill-fated vessel were traders and farmers transporting goods for sale. Local leaders have called for improved safety regulations and investment in waterway infrastructure to prevent future disasters.
