The U.S. Department of Education has discontinued funding for campus-based child care programs at more than a dozen colleges, following the Trump administration’s proposal to eliminate the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program.

CCAMPIS, established in 1998, provided federal grants to colleges and universities to support low-income student parents with on-campus child care services. In recent years, the program served over 10,000 students annually, helping them balance academic responsibilities with parenting.

The administration’s 2026 budget proposal described the program as “unaffordable and duplicative,” suggesting that funding needs could be met through the broader Child Care Development Block Grant, which is administered by states.

Student advocacy groups have warned that the cuts may force many parenting students to leave college due to rising child care costs and limited alternatives. Critics argue the move undermines access to higher education for vulnerable populations.
