Zimbabwe Journalist Remains in Custody After Court Adjournment

Zimbabwean journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who has been in custody since February 24, remains behind bars following a court hearing on Wednesday. Mhlanga, a reporter for NewsDay and Heart and Soul Television, was arrested on charges of incitement linked to his interviews with Blessed Geza, a war veteran-turned-politician critical of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The case was adjourned by High Court Justice Gibson Mandaza in Harare, as more time was requested to examine the details. Mhlanga’s defense team had applied for bail, but the request was denied.

The journalist’s arrest stems from interviews conducted in November and January with Geza, during which Geza called for public protests to oust Mnangagwa, citing economic issues and the president’s leadership failures. Following the interviews, Geza was expelled from the ruling Zanu PF party for violating regulations with his public comments.

Mhlanga’s lawyer, who views the arrest as a warning to others discussing political matters, said the case highlights the growing risks of speaking out against the government, particularly regarding Mnangagwa’s potential third term. The case continues to draw attention to press freedoms and political expression in Zimbabwe.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about media freedom and political dissent in the country as it approaches critical political discussions in the lead-up to future elections.
