Travel

Virgin Atlantic founder Sir Richard Branson has announced that Corneel Koster, the airline’s current Chief Customer and Operating Officer, will take over as Chief Executive Officer on 1 January 2026. He will replace Shai Weiss, who has led the airline since 2019 and will depart on 31 December 2025.

Leadership Transition

Weiss joined Virgin Atlantic in 2014 as Chief Financial Officer before becoming Chief Commercial Officer and later CEO. His tenure was defined by steering the airline through the Covid-19 pandemic, overseeing a major transformation programme, and returning the carrier to profitability with record performance in 2024.

Branson praised Weiss’s leadership, saying he had “raised the bar across the industry” and left the airline stronger than ever.

Incoming CEO

Koster, who rejoined Virgin Atlantic in 2019, has been central to the airline’s recovery and modernization. He led the introduction of the Airbus A330neo fleet, digital operational upgrades, and frontline service improvements. With more than 30 years of aviation experience, including senior roles at Delta Air Lines, Aeroméxico, and KLM, Koster is regarded as a seasoned industry leader with deep operational expertise.

In a statement, Koster said: “It is an incredible privilege to take up the role of CEO. Virgin Atlantic has always been about delivering the best experiences in the skies with the challenger spirit Richard instilled from day one. I am determined to carry that spirit forward.”

Outlook

The leadership handover comes as Virgin Atlantic continues to expand its transatlantic network and strengthen its joint venture with Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM. Industry analysts say Koster’s appointment signals continuity, with a focus on customer experience, operational reliability, and sustainable growth.

The transition marks the end of a pivotal chapter under Weiss and the beginning of a new era under Koster, as Virgin Atlantic seeks to consolidate its position as one of the UK’s leading long-haul carriers.
