In a major leap toward transforming urban transportation, Joby Aviation has partnered with Virgin Atlantic to introduce the UK’s first zero-emission air taxi service. Announced on March 15, 2025, the service aims to revolutionize travel between major cities with fast, eco-friendly flights.
Joby’s all-electric air taxis will connect key Virgin Atlantic hubs, including London Heathrow and Manchester Airport, with regional cities. The aircraft, capable of flying at speeds up to 200 mph, will carry up to four passengers on trips of up to 100 miles, offering significantly faster travel times compared to traditional road transport. For example, a flight from Manchester Airport to Leeds could take just 15 minutes.
Passengers flying with Virgin Atlantic or Delta Air Lines will be able to book these air taxi services directly through the airline. The partnership also aims to keep fares competitive, aligning with premium ride-sharing costs, making air taxis more accessible to travelers.
Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting its potential to enhance convenience and offer faster, sustainable travel options. Joby’s aircraft, already tested in New York, Japan, and Korea, will soon be ready for passengers in the UK, following successful trials and regulatory approvals, including a submission to the UK Civil Aviation Authority in 2022.
This partnership marks a significant step in the UK’s push for sustainable travel, bringing electric, zero-emission air transportation closer to reality for everyday travelers.
