Under Secretary Zeya’s Travel to Malaysia and Vietnam

Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya will travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Hanoi, Vietnam from August 25-31, 2024, to engage partners on human rights, humanitarian cooperation, and human-centered civilian security.

In Kuala Lumpur, Under Secretary Zeya will convey appreciation for U.S.-Malaysia cooperation based on democratic values and a respect for human rights and the rule of law. She will engage senior government officials, civil society organizations, and media representatives on the United States’ commitment to governance reform and cooperation on strategic priorities, including combatting trafficking in persons and anti-corruption, meeting global humanitarian needs, and supporting Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship.

In Hanoi, Under Secretary Zeya will highlight the strength and dynamism of the U.S.‐Vietnam relationship to achieve our shared goals of peace, stability, cooperation, and prosperity in the region and the world. In meetings with senior Vietnamese officials, the Under Secretary will underscore the United States’ commitment to the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including the promotion and protection of human rights, including freedom of religion or belief, support for marginalized and vulnerable groups, and coordination to address global challenges, including trafficking in persons and other transnational crimes. She will be joined by Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary Allison Peters.
