Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya will travel to Astana, Kazakhstan and Tashkent, Uzbekistan from May 19-23 to engage on democratic governance and rule of law; human rights and protection of vulnerable populations; and religious freedom.
In Astana, Under Secretary Zeya will lead the U.S. delegation at the third annual United States-Kazakhstan High-Level Dialogue (HLD) on Human Rights and Democratic Reforms to underscore our partnership and support for Kazakhstan’s domestic reforms. At the HLD, she will engage government partners on freedom of expression and media, freedom of association, political participation, rule of law, and protection of vulnerable populations. Additionally, the Under Secretary will meet with civil society representatives to advance democratic values and commend Kazakhstan’s efforts to address domestic violence.
In Tashkent, Under Secretary Zeya will give remarks at the Academic Conference on Constitutional Criminal Procedures, hosted by Regional Dialogue, to bolster Uzbekistan’s ongoing implementation of constitutional reforms on human rights and equal access to justice. She will also engage senior government officials, civil society, and human rights defenders to promote gender equality, combat gender-based violence, support religious freedom, and protect vulnerable populations.
