UN Urges Swift Justice After Violent Attacks on Media During Bangladesh Protests

The United Nations has issued a sharp call for accountability after a wave of violent attacks on major Bangladeshi media outlets and cultural institutions during nationwide protests. UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression Irene Khan described the incidents as “deeply alarming,” urging authorities to launch prompt and effective investigations and bring perpetrators to justice.

The unrest erupted following the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth leader associated with the July 2024 uprising, who was shot dead in broad daylight. His death triggered mass demonstrations across the country, during which mobs targeted several high‑profile institutions.

Among the worst‑hit were the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, two of Bangladesh’s leading newspapers. Both suffered arson and vandalism, while the Chhayanaut cultural centre—an iconic institution in Dhaka—was also attacked. In a separate incident, the editor of New Age was assaulted amid the escalating tensions.

Khan stressed that the attacks “did not emerge in a vacuum,” pointing to longstanding concerns about impunity for violence against journalists and civil society. She warned that failure to hold perpetrators accountable risks emboldening future assaults on press freedom and democratic expression.

Human rights advocates have echoed the UN’s concerns, arguing that the violence underscores the fragility of media protections in Bangladesh. As investigations proceed, international observers continue to press Dhaka to demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding journalists and upholding the rule of law.
