UN Chief Welcomes Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Release Agreement

World

New York, 9 October 2025 — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the announcement of an agreement aimed at securing a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza, calling it a critical step toward ending one of the region’s most devastating conflicts in decades.

A Call for Urgency

“The stakes have never been higher,” Guterres said in a statement, urging all parties to fully honor their commitments. “The suffering must end. All hostages must be released in a dignified manner. A permanent ceasefire must be secured. The fighting must stop once and for all.”

Humanitarian Catastrophe

The war, now entering its third year, has left tens of thousands dead and displaced millions, with Gaza’s population enduring famine, bombardment, and the collapse of essential services. The UN has repeatedly described the situation as a humanitarian catastrophe on a scale that defies comprehension.

Mediators and Next Steps

The agreement, brokered with the help of Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, is seen as the most significant breakthrough since hostilities began in October 2023. While details of the phased plan remain under negotiation, the first stage is expected to include the release of hostages and the cessation of military operations.

Outlook

Guterres emphasized that the deal must serve as a foundation for a credible political process leading to lasting peace. The UN, he said, stands ready to support implementation and to scale up humanitarian relief.

“The world must seize this opportunity,” he concluded, “to end the bloodshed and give both Palestinians and Israelis the chance to live in peace, dignity, and security.”
