A wave of Ukrainian drone attacks forced the temporary closure of multiple airports across Russia, including four in the Moscow region, overnight. While reports indicate minor injuries, no significant damage has been confirmed. Sheremetyevo Airport, Moscow’s busiest hub, remained unaffected by the strikes.
Drone Assault and Airspace Disruptions
Russian authorities suspended flights at several airports as over 100 drones targeted multiple regions, including Nizhny Novgorod and Volgograd. The attacks come just days before Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, marking 80 years since Nazi Germany’s defeat. Security measures in Moscow have been heightened, with officials warning of potential internet restrictions during the commemorations.
Prisoner Exchange Amid Rising Tensions
Later on Tuesday, Russia and Ukraine conducted a prisoner swap, exchanging 205 detainees each. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) mediated the exchange, continuing its role as a key diplomatic facilitator in the conflict.
Ceasefire Uncertainty
The drone strikes threaten a planned 72-hour ceasefire, announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin, set to begin on May 8. Ukraine has dismissed the truce as insufficient, advocating for a longer, unconditional ceasefire.
