The UK Government has announced £1 million in emergency funding to support victims of the recent 6.0-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, which has claimed over 800 lives and injured thousands. The aid will be delivered through trusted international partners to ensure it does not reach the Taliban administration.

The funding will be split between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), focusing on critical healthcare and emergency supplies for communities most affected by the disaster.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated, “The UK remains committed to the people of Afghanistan, and this emergency funding will help our partners deliver life-saving support where it is needed most.”

The earthquake struck near Jalalabad, compounding an already dire humanitarian situation in a country where over half the population requires urgent assistance. International aid efforts have been hampered by reduced funding and political constraints since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.
