UK Human Rights Ambassador Eleanor Sanders has arrived in Dhaka for a three-day visit aimed at reinforcing the UK’s commitment to human rights and democracy in Bangladesh. The visit, which underscores the UK’s ongoing support for human rights, comes at a crucial time as Bangladesh seeks to navigate challenges in law, order, and governance under its Interim Government.
During her visit, Sanders will engage with key figures from the Interim Government, human rights defenders, and various partners. Her meetings will focus on justice, accountability, fundamental freedoms, and fostering an environment where human rights are protected. She will also meet with senior government officials and advisers to discuss progress on these issues.
One highlight of her visit will be a seminar at the University of Dhaka, where Sanders will speak to students about the importance of upholding human rights, with a special focus on media freedom, freedom of religion, and the protection of minority groups. This marks a key moment in the UK’s ongoing efforts to promote fundamental rights, particularly among the younger generation.
Sanders will also visit Cox’s Bazar, home to one of the world’s largest Rohingya refugee camps, where the UK is funding critical projects to support displaced communities. These include food distribution, female health and education, and LPG distribution programs designed to improve the living conditions of the refugees.
As part of her mission, Sanders will announce additional UK funding for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which will be used to strengthen efforts aimed at addressing human rights violations and promoting accountability in Bangladesh.
In her remarks, Sanders emphasized the UK’s dedication to supporting the Interim Government’s reforms, which she sees as foundational for long-term growth and human rights. She also highlighted priorities such as gender equality, labour rights, and religious freedom, which remain central to the UK-Bangladesh partnership.
Sarah Cooke, the UK’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, expressed her pleasure at welcoming Sanders and reaffirmed the UK’s longstanding relationship with Bangladesh, stating that the visit exemplifies the UK’s commitment to creating a more prosperous and democratic future for the country.
This visit not only underscores the strong ties between the two nations but also serves as a key moment in the ongoing dialogue on accountability, freedom, and human rights protection in Bangladesh.
