Tragedy struck near Marana Regional Airport in Arizona after two small planes collided midair on Wednesday 19/02/2025, resulting in at least two fatalities. The aircraft involved were identified as a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II, both single-engine, fixed-wing planes.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the collision occurred “upwind of runway 12,” one of the airport’s two runways. Preliminary reports revealed that the Cessna was able to land safely after the incident, while the Lancair crashed into the ground near runway 3, sparking a post-impact fire.

The NTSB is leading the investigation into the crash, though details about the victims remain undisclosed at this time.

This incident follows a series of aviation tragedies in recent weeks, including a fatal helicopter collision with an American Airlines flight in Washington DC, a deadly medical transport plane crash in Philadelphia, and a dramatic runway incident in Toronto involving a Delta Air Lines flight.

In light of these incidents, the U.S. aviation sector has called for urgent Congressional action to address air traffic control issues, citing the need for increased funding for technology and staffing to prevent future tragedies.
