Turkey’s Ongoing Political Crisis: 1,879 Arrested, Opposition Appoints Interim Mayor

World

Turkish authorities have arrested at least 1,879 individuals in connection with protests over the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, sparking widespread unrest. In response, the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) appointed Nuri Aslan as interim mayor, with the expectation that he will serve for the remainder of İmamoğlu’s term.

The protests, primarily calling for İmamoğlu’s release, reflect deepening divisions within Turkey’s political landscape. However, it appears highly unlikely that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will change course. His motives may extend beyond the removal of a key political rival ahead of the 2028 presidential election. By targeting İmamoğlu, Erdoğan not only eliminates a formidable challenger but also potentially fractures the broad-based opposition movement.

İmamoğlu has proven to be a unifying figure, appealing to diverse constituencies within the anti-Erdoğan coalition. In contrast, other leading opposition figures, such as CHP’s Mansur Yavaş, risk alienating some of those voters, making it easier for Erdoğan to mount a successful challenge against a more fragmented opposition.

The political maneuvering surrounding İmamoğlu’s arrest underscores Erdoğan’s strategic aim to weaken the opposition and consolidate power as the country approaches a critical electoral period. As the situation continues to unfold, the impact on Turkey’s political future remains uncertain, with many questioning the long-term consequences for the opposition’s unity and strength.
