Transportation Strike Over Fuel Price Hike Brings Bolivia’s Major Cities to a Halt

World

Bolivia’s two largest cities, La Paz and Santa Cruz, were effectively paralyzed on Friday as public transportation workers launched a sweeping strike in response to a 100% increase in fuel prices ordered by the country’s new government.

The sudden price hike—part of an effort to unwind long‑standing fuel subsidies—triggered immediate economic shock. Food and transport costs surged, prompting drivers, commuters, and residents to join demonstrations across urban centers. In La Paz, protesters blocked intersections and key thoroughfares, while in Santa Cruz and other cities, buses and minibuses remained off the streets, creating long queues and widespread disruption.

Union leaders have demanded that authorities reverse the fuel increase and restore subsidies for gasoline and diesel. Edson Valdez, a prominent transportation union representative, warned that the unrest could escalate into a nationwide protest movement if the government does not reconsider its policy shift.

The strike underscores the political and economic volatility facing Bolivia as it confronts rising fiscal pressures and public frustration over the cost of living. With negotiations still uncertain, the standoff is emerging as one of the first major tests for the country’s new leadership.
