June 20, 2025 – Abuja / Makurdi — Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has ordered security forces to apprehend those responsible for the mass killing of at least 150 people in Benue State during attacks on the Yelewata community from Friday night, June 13, to Saturday morning, June 14.

Gunmen reportedly opened fire on sleeping villagers and set homes ablaze. Many of the victims had sought refuge in a local market after fleeing previous violence.

Presidential Visit and Statement

Tinubu visited Makurdi, the state capital, five days after the attacks. He met with survivors, toured a local hospital, and held discussions with community leaders. On social media, he stated: “We will restore peace, rebuild, and bring the perpetrators to justice. You are not alone.”

While in Benue, Tinubu criticized law enforcement for failing to make arrests days after the attack. “How come no arrest has been made?” he asked senior police officials.

Background and Blame

Local authorities attribute the massacre to suspected armed herdsmen, a recurring issue in Nigeria’s protracted conflict between pastoralists and farmers. This attack is among the deadliest in the region in recent years.

Criticism and Security Concerns

The President has faced criticism for his delayed response. His official statement was issued over 24 hours after the killings, and he did not visit Yelewata itself.

Security analyst Senator Iroegbu remarked: “No justice, no accountability, and no closure for the victims and their communities. Until this changes, impunity will remain the norm.”

Broader Implications

Benue has been at the center of Nigeria’s long-running security crisis. Rights groups have warned that the lack of arrests and prosecutions fuels continued violence. With thousands displaced and communities on edge, calls are growing for comprehensive security and justice reforms.
