With the nomination period officially closed, three candidates have secured places on the ballot for Ireland’s 2025 presidential election. The race will feature Independent TD Catherine Connolly, Fine Gael Minister Heather Humphreys, and former Dublin senior football manager Jim Gavin, representing Fianna Fáil.

Catherine Connolly, a long-serving TD for Galway West, enters the contest as an independent voice with a record of parliamentary advocacy and civic engagement. Heather Humphreys, currently Minister for Social Protection and Rural and Community Development, brings cabinet-level experience and the backing of Fine Gael. Jim Gavin, widely respected for his leadership in Gaelic football, is making his political debut under the Fianna Fáil banner.

The election, scheduled for later this year, will determine the successor to President Michael D. Higgins, who concludes his second term in office. Campaigns are expected to focus on themes of national identity, social cohesion, and Ireland’s role on the global stage.

The official campaign period begins next month, with televised debates and public forums planned across the country.
