Let’s explore Atlantic Canada on an ultimate mega road trip!
Atlantic Canada, also called the Atlantic Provinces, is the region of Canada
comprising the four Atlantic coast provinces: The Maritimes – New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island – and the easternmost province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Now that I’ve visited all four provinces that makeup Atlantic Canada, it is a good time to combine all my road trip itineraries and create one ultimate road trip guide in one place.
First of all, to cover all the provinces equally, I recommend allowing 4 weeks to complete the trip. However, 6 weeks would be ideal to cover almost everything (but still not everything).
Due to the province’s size, Newfoundland and Labrador could have a month alone.
You can take a ferry from North Sydney (Nova Scotia) to Port Aux Basques or Argentia by car. There’s also a ferry from Blanc Sablon (Labrador) to St Barbe, Newfoundland. This is how you can connect the provinces by car.
I recommend breaking up the trip rather than doing it all at once.
Nova Scotia and New Brunswick can quickly be done in a loop, with the ferry crossing at Digby making that happen.
Then, Prince Edward Island is a bridge crossing from Nova Scotia or a 75-minute ferry ride across the Northumberland Strait between Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island, and Caribou, Nova Scotia.
Splitting up the provinces into two trips makes.
But why not? Anything is possible, and you can visit all four provinces across Atlantic Canada in one big road trip. Here are my suggestions on what to do.

For me, Nova Scotia was where my Atlantic Canada adventure began in 2017, and I’ve been lucky enough to return to the province on four different trips.
Halifax is a great starting point for your Atlantic Canada Road-Trip adventure, being an international airport and having flight time under seven hours from London, UK.
Here are my top road trip tips: Exploring the Beauty of Nova Scotia.
1. Halifax: Begin your Nova Scotia road trip in the bustling capital city of Halifax. This harbour town is brimming with charm, history, and things to do.
Harbourwalk: Take a stroll along Halifax’s vibrant waterfront. Lined with unique shops, seafood restaurants, and scenic harbour views, the Harbourwalk is the perfect introduction to Nova Scotia.
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic: Dive into the province’s rich maritime history. Highlights include exhibits on the Titanic and tales of Nova Scotia’s seafaring past.
Alexander Keith’s Brewery: Unwind with a tour of this historic brewery, where you can enjoy a sample of their delicious local beer.
Citadel Hill: Explore the iconic star-shaped fort that overlooks the city. It’s a great spot to learn about Halifax’s military history and enjoy panoramic views of the area.
2. Head to the South Shore
As you head south from Halifax, prepare for picturesque coastal towns and breathtaking views.
Peggy’s Cove: Home to one of the most photographed lighthouses in Canada, Peggy’s Cove is a quintessential Nova Scotia experience. The rugged coastal rocks and crashing waves make this a must-see stop.
Lunenburg: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this charming town is known for its colourful buildings and rich shipbuilding history. Don’t miss a visit to the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic.
Mahone Bay: Famous for its iconic trio of waterfront churches, it is the perfect spot to slow down, shop at boutique stores, and grab a coffee by the water.
3. Discover the Annapolis Valley
The Annapolis Valley is a wine lover’s dream and a historical region.
Wolfville: Sample some of Nova Scotia’s finest wines at local vineyards. The stunning landscapes of rolling vineyards and the Bay of Fundy make for a relaxing and scenic day.
Grand-Pré National Historic Site: Dive into the history of the Acadian people at this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which commemorates the unique story of their culture and resilience.
Cape Split: For incredible coastal views, hike the Cape Split trail. The dramatic cliffs and vistas of the Bay of Fundy are worth the effort.
4. Drive Along the Bay of Fundy
No Nova Scotia road trip would be complete without experiencing the wonders of the Bay of Fundy, home to the world’s highest tides.
Tidal Bore Rafting: For thrill-seekers, tidal bore rafting is a must. Ride the powerful tidal waves and feel the adrenaline rush of this one-of-a-kind adventure.
Burntcoat Head Park: Witness the phenomenon of the world’s highest tides. You can walk along the ocean floor at low tide and marvel at the dramatic red rock formations.
Five Islands Provincial Park: Soak in the stunning landscapes of cliffs, islands, and rocky shores. It’s a picture-perfect spot for hiking and exploring.
5. Experience the Cabot Trail
Last but certainly not least is the legendary Cabot Trail, one of the most scenic drives in the world. Winding through Cape Breton Island, this route offers jaw-dropping views of rugged coastlines, rolling hills, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Skyline Trail: Hike the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park for panoramic ocean views. This trail is perfect for soaking in the region’s beauty and catching a stunning sunset.
Bonus tip: Savor the Seafood: Treat yourself to Nova Scotia’s fresh seafood, from lobster rolls from Hall’s Harbour lobster pound to Digby scallops.
