When we last saw Ken Griffey Jr., the Team USA hitting coach was showing the kids he’s still got it, sweet-swinging his way to a batting practice dinger at age 53. The Cincinnati Reds may want to take note. If they need an outfielder in a pinch, they should call Griffey. Might as well, since he’ll be the fourth-highest salary on their payroll in 2023 despite not having suited up for the team since 2008. Yes, just like the much-ballyhooed Bobby Bonilla contract, The Kid took deferred payments that will net him a check for more than $3.5 million not just this season, but next year as well. Certainly nice work if you can get it.
Which brings us to today’s quiz of the day. Griffey led all of baseball in home runs just once in his career, 1997. So with that in mind how many MLB home run leaders since that season can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
