JAKARTA — Public unrest has intensified in Indonesia’s capital after student groups called for protests at Jakarta’s police headquarters on Friday, following the death of a motorcycle ride-sharing driver struck by a police tactical vehicle.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening near the Bendungan Hilir flats, where police were dispersing demonstrators. The victim, identified as 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan, was reportedly not involved in the protest and died after being run over by an armored vehicle operated by the Jakarta Metro Police’s Mobile Brigade unit.
The tragedy has sparked widespread condemnation, with student unions and transport worker associations demanding accountability and a transparent investigation. President Prabowo Subianto expressed condolences and ordered a full inquiry, stating that officers responsible must be held accountable.
Seven police personnel have been detained for questioning, and the National Police’s internal affairs division is leading the investigation. In response to the protest call, several schools released students early and businesses advised staff to work remotely. Military personnel have been deployed in key areas of the city.
The incident has reignited concerns over police conduct and crowd control tactics, with civil society groups urging reforms to prevent further casualties.
