Taoiseach Micheál Martin has called on G20 leaders to confront “trade‑distorting industrial policies” and modernise the global trading system, in what marked Ireland’s first‑ever address at the summit.
Ireland’s Debut on the Global Stage
Speaking in Johannesburg, Martin addressed leaders from the world’s largest economies, stressing the need for fairer and more transparent trade rules. His intervention highlighted Ireland’s growing role in international economic policy, as the country seeks to position itself as a champion of open markets and multilateral cooperation.
Call for Reform
Martin argued that industrial policies which distort competition undermine sustainable growth and global resilience. He urged the G20 to strengthen the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework and ensure that smaller economies are not disadvantaged by protectionist measures.
“We must modernise world trade and tackle policies that distort competition and hinder inclusive growth,” the Taoiseach said.
Notable Absence
The session was attended by leaders from across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. However, U.S. President Donald Trump boycotted the summit, a move that underscored divisions within the group at a time of heightened global economic uncertainty.
