Dublin, 5 August 2025 — Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Harris, has secured the backing of the European Union in the case of Gena Heraty, an Irish humanitarian worker kidnapped in Haiti. Following direct discussions with Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the EU has agreed to designate a diplomatic point of contact in Haiti to coordinate efforts with Ireland aimed at securing the safe release of Ms Heraty and other hostages.
Ms Heraty, a native of Westport, Co Mayo, was abducted on 3 August along with seven colleagues and a three-year-old child from the Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs (NPFS) compound in Kenscoff, near Port-au-Prince. She has worked in Haiti for over 30 years, leading special needs programmes and overseeing the Sainte-Helene orphanage.
🇪🇺 EU Diplomatic Engagement
The EU maintains a diplomatic presence in Haiti, and following the Tánaiste’s engagement, a designated EU diplomat will now liaise directly with Irish officials on the case. This move ensures the situation remains a priority on the EU’s foreign affairs agenda.
Tánaiste Harris stated:
“The kidnapping of Gena Heraty, her co-workers, and a young child is utterly devastating. I welcome the EU’s swift commitment to support Ireland and designate a point of contact in Haiti. This is a vital development in our ongoing diplomatic efforts.”
🕊️ Ongoing Efforts and Family Support
The Department of Foreign Affairs has been in continuous contact with the Heraty family, providing updates and support. Diplomatic channels remain active at both political and operational levels, including engagement with Haiti’s Foreign Minister, Harvel Jean-Baptiste, who has pledged cooperation.
The Heraty family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support and urged continued discretion given the sensitivity of the situation:
“We continue to ask that you keep Gena, everyone taken with her, and their families in your hearts as we pray for their safe and speedy return”.
🧡 Profile of Gena Heraty
Gena Heraty is widely respected for her humanitarian work and dedication to vulnerable communities in Haiti. She is affiliated with Viatores Christi, a lay missionary organisation, and is described by colleagues as resilient, compassionate, and deeply committed to her vocation.
Jessica Mullins, Chair of NPH Ireland, noted:
“Gena is one of the most selfless people I’ve ever met. Her work is not just a job—it’s her mission in life.”
For further updates, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will continue to provide information as developments unfold.
