DUBLIN — Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris TD paid tribute to Ireland’s Defence Forces veterans during a visit on 26 August to the headquarters of the Organisation of National Ex-Service Personnel (ONE) at Brú na bhFiann.

Harris commended ONE’s longstanding support for ex-service members, highlighting its role in providing accommodation for homeless veterans and offering nationwide assistance through its network of branches and support centres. “ONE has provided invaluable support to thousands of ex-service personnel since its foundation in 1951,” he said.

The Tánaiste emphasized the pride and camaraderie shared among Defence Forces members and praised veterans’ associations for preserving a unique sense of identity and belonging among those who served in Óglaigh na hÉireann.

He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening support for veterans, noting a 33% increase in departmental funding to ONE this year, bringing the total to €173,000. Harris further reiterated plans to establish an Office of Veteran Affairs, with consultations between the Department of Defence and ONE expected to begin shortly.

The visit underscores the Government’s ongoing efforts to recognize and support the contributions of Ireland’s military veterans.
