On 18 July 2025, Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Simon Harris TD held a series of diplomatic discussions with Jean-Pierre LaCroix, UN Under Secretary General for Peace Operations, Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Foreign Minister, and Youssef Rajji, Lebanon’s Foreign Minister. The talks focused on the upcoming renewal of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate, due at the end of August.
🕊️ Ireland’s Commitment to Peacekeeping
Tánaiste Harris reiterated Ireland’s longstanding support for UNIFIL, highlighting its role in promoting stability and security in southern Lebanon. Ireland has contributed to the mission since 1978, with over 340 Defence Forces personnel currently deployed.
“UNIFIL continues to play a vital role in ensuring stability and security. I remain exceptionally proud of the Defence Forces members serving in UNIFIL and the contribution they make every day,” Harris stated.
⚖️ Justice for Private Seán Rooney
In his call with Foreign Minister Rajji, Harris raised concerns over the ongoing trial of those accused in the December 2022 killing of Private Seán Rooney, an Irish peacekeeper. He emphasized the need for accountability and timely justice for Rooney’s family and the Irish public.
🌍 Diplomatic Engagement Ahead of Mandate Renewal
The discussions come amid growing uncertainty over the future of UNIFIL, with Israel and the United States reportedly critical of the mission’s scope. Ireland is actively engaging with France, Poland, and other UN Security Council members to secure continued support for the mandate.
Ireland remains committed to the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which underpins UNIFIL’s operations, and to maintaining its role in international peacekeeping and regional stability.
