Dublin, 3 October 2025 — Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris has confirmed that 16 Irish citizens detained following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla have been transferred to a detention facility in southern Israel.
Priority on Safety and Consular Support
Speaking after convening a meeting of senior officials at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Harris said his primary concern is the safety and wellbeing of those detained. An embassy team, including Ireland’s Ambassador to Israel, is present at the facility to provide consular assistance, ensure access to legal representation, and facilitate medical treatment where required.
Humanitarian Context
The Tánaiste acknowledged that the flotilla participants’ actions reflected a widespread international desire to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising dozens of vessels, had sought to deliver aid and challenge Israel’s blockade of the territory before being intercepted by Israeli naval forces earlier this week.
Support for Families
Officials in Dublin remain in close contact with the families of those detained. Harris described the situation as “an exceptionally difficult time” for relatives and pledged continued updates as more information becomes available.
Monitoring Wider Developments
The Tánaiste also confirmed that other Irish citizens are participating in additional flotillas en route to Gaza, and said the Department of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the evolving situation.
The interception of the flotilla has drawn international scrutiny, with human rights groups and governments debating the legality of Israel’s actions in international waters. For Ireland, the immediate focus remains on securing the welfare of its citizens and ensuring they are treated in accordance with international law.
