At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona, Deutsche Telekom (the parent company of T-Mobile) announced its plans to launch a new AI-driven smartphone, powered by the Perplexity Assistant. Set for release later this year, the device will run on “Magenta AI,” offering users a suite of AI tools including Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs, and Picsart, alongside Perplexity’s AI search engine.
The AI phone concept is designed to be “app-less,” primarily controlled by voice, and aims to simplify everyday tasks. According to Deutsche Telekom board member Claudia Nemat, the phone will be capable of booking taxis, making restaurant reservations, and even handling shopping—without the need to switch between apps.
In addition to the dedicated AI phone, many of the features, including Perplexity’s search engine, will be made available on other smartphones through Deutsche Telekom’s MeinMagenta app. This summer, updates to the app will integrate AI tools from Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs, and Picsart.
While details about the phone’s hardware remain limited, early images suggest it will be a budget to midrange Android device with distinct design features like thick bezels and a pink sleep/wake button.
The AI phone is slated for release in the second half of 2024, bringing a new wave of AI-powered convenience to the smartphone market.
