As agitations against Naira scarcity across the country spreads, Epe town in Lagos State had its fair share of destruction of banks and properties by some suspected hoodlums.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that about four banks were vandalised by suspected hoodlums in Epe on Friday.
The attacks happened around 10:05am on Friday when some suspected hoodlums were spotted destroying bank properties in Epe.
The banks were Polaris Bank, United Bank for Africa, Zenith Bank and First Bank.
However, the Nigeria Police intervened at the scene to restore peace and normalcy in the area.
NAN also reports that all efforts to speak with the Divisional Police Officer and some bank managers proved abortive.
Meanwhile, The Nigeria Police Force has warned against attacks on banks while noting that attackers will be treated as armed robbers, The PUNCH reports.
This warning came on the heels of attacks on bank facilities in several parts of the country following the naira crunch.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a Friday night video posted on the NPF’s Facebook page, which was seen by our correspondent, cautioned against such attacks, noting that it would be resisted by the police.
Adejobi said, “We complain that banks don’t attend to us yet we go to their facilities and set them ablaze, destroy ATMs. How do you want them to serve you better if you have destroyed their facilities?
“I think we need to educate ourselves on what the law says about this. You don’t go to any bank, ATM, or financial institution to attack. It is criminal and tantamount to armed robbery. If you are caught in the act, you will be treated as an armed robber.”
