Sudanese People Facing Devastating Hunger Crisis, Says Human Rights Expert

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan has reached catastrophic levels, with thousands of people now “starving to death” amid ongoing political turmoil and conflict. According to Jean-Baptiste Gallopin, a senior expert at Human Rights, who has been closely monitoring Sudanese political and security issues since 2010, the situation is dire. Gallopin, who spoke exclusively to us, detailed the severe food shortages and widespread suffering that have gripped the country in recent months.

Sudan has been in the midst of a brutal conflict since April 2023, when clashes broke out between rival military factions. The conflict has displaced millions and left the population without access to basic necessities, including food, healthcare, and clean water.

Gallopin explained that the war has not only caused immense physical harm but also obliterated Sudan’s already fragile infrastructure, worsening the effects of what was already a dire humanitarian situation. As the conflict continues to escalate, international aid has struggled to reach those in desperate need, and the blockade on vital resources has left communities across the country facing famine.

“The scale of this crisis is beyond comprehension,” Gallopin said. “People are simply dying from starvation, and there is no immediate relief in sight.” Humanitarian groups have warned that the situation could deteriorate further without swift international intervention.

This crisis has drawn global attention, with calls for immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access to be granted. However, as the conflict persists, the Sudanese people continue to bear the brunt of this devastating war, with no clear resolution in sight.
