A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck south of Panama on March 21, 2025, at 14:50 UTC. The earthquake, with a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), hit approximately 112 km (70 miles) southeast of Burica and 132 km (82 miles) south of Pedregal, both located in Chiriqui Province.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), around 972,000 people experienced weak shaking. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
The National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (NWS PTWC) confirmed there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
While the region is home to a mix of vulnerable and earthquake-resistant structures, including mud walls and informal construction, the USGS issued a Green alert indicating a low likelihood of casualties or major economic losses.
