Following the recent meeting in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tánaiste Simon Harris TD has welcomed President Trump’s expressed commitment to resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Tánaiste also noted the significance of the upcoming meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, scheduled to take place in Washington next Monday.
🔹 Ireland’s Position on the Conflict
Tánaiste Harris reaffirmed Ireland’s unwavering stance on the conflict, stating:
“We must remember that Russia remains the aggressor in this conflict and has the power to end its aggression at any time. President Zelenskyy and his government must be central to any decisions regarding the resolution of this war. Ireland will continue to work in close coordination with our EU partners to pursue a just and lasting peace—one that fully upholds international law, respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, and guarantees the inviolability of its borders.”
🔹 Call for Immediate Ceasefire and Security Guarantees
Emphasizing the urgency of de-escalation, the Tánaiste called for concrete steps toward peace:
“As a first step, we urge Russia to agree to a full and unconditional ceasefire. Ukraine must also be provided with strong and credible security guarantees to ensure its long-term stability. This is not only vital for Ukraine’s future, but also for the broader security architecture of Europe.”
He further reiterated Ireland’s readiness to act in concert with EU partners:
“Ireland, alongside our European Union colleagues, stands prepared to impose further sanctions and maintain coordinated diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia, should it fail to take meaningful steps toward peace.”
🔹 Humanitarian Impact and Long-Term Consequences
Concluding his remarks, Tánaiste Harris highlighted the profound human cost of the war:
“We must never forget the devastating impact this war has had on the people of Ukraine—their suffering is immense, and the scars left by this conflict will endure for generations, especially among the youth.”
