Stadler has placed an order for 50 mtu Series 4000 diesel engines from Rolls-Royce to power a new fleet of high-speed trains for Saudi Arabia Railways. The trains are scheduled to operate on the Dammam–Riyadh corridor, reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h.
Each of the ten trains will be equipped with four mtu 12V 4000 R64 engines, housed across two power cars. An additional ten engines will be supplied as spares and for reserve units to ensure uninterrupted service during maintenance. The agreement includes an option for 40 more engines to support future fleet expansion.
Prior to entering passenger service, four trains will undergo testing and certification in both Europe and Saudi Arabia. Rolls-Royce has a longstanding relationship with Saudi Arabia Railways, having delivered over 70 mtu engines since 2012. The Series 4000 units are engineered to perform reliably in extreme desert conditions, including high temperatures and airborne dust.
The mtu propulsion systems meet EU Stage V emission standards, supporting environmental compliance and operational efficiency. Stadler’s commercial project lead, Tobias Arnold, emphasized the strategic importance of the technology, citing its role in delivering speed, safety, and sustainability.
