In a military operation backed by local forces, the Somali government reported that over 70 members of the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab were killed on Tuesday. The operation was launched in response to recent Al-Shabaab attacks in the region.
The terrorist group has waged a violent insurgency against the Somali government for more than 15 years, seeking to impose Islamic law on the country. Somalia’s President has vowed to eliminate Al-Shabaab, declaring a “total” war against the group. The military campaign is supported by local militias, the African Union (AU) forces, and U.S. airstrikes.
Sources from AFP and local officials have confirmed the operation’s success in targeting Al-Shabaab militants.
