SoftBank Acquires Ampere Computing for $6.5 Billion to Boost AI and Chip Innovation

SoftBank Group has announced the acquisition of U.S.-based chip designer Ampere Computing for $6.5 billion. The deal is aimed at enhancing SoftBank’s presence in the AI and high-performance computing sectors, with Ampere’s energy-efficient, Arm-based chips playing a pivotal role in SoftBank’s vision for the future of computing.

SoftBank CEO, Masayoshi Son, highlighted the strategic significance of the acquisition, noting that Ampere’s expertise in AI-driven chip design would deepen SoftBank’s commitment to innovation in the U.S. “Ampere’s leadership in high-performance computing strengthens our position in AI,” Son stated in a release.

Ampere, founded by Renee James, focuses on designing Arm processors for AI workloads and high-performance computing, making this acquisition an essential part of SoftBank’s expanding portfolio in next-generation technologies. James expressed enthusiasm for the deal, stating it would accelerate the company’s roadmap for AmpereOne processors.

The transaction, set to close in the second half of 2025, is subject to regulatory approvals, including antitrust clearance by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. After completion, Ampere will continue operating under its name and remain headquartered in Santa Clara.

SoftBank, which already holds a majority stake in Arm, sees this acquisition as a vital step in reinforcing its global tech and AI capabilities.
