A powerful storm is wreaking havoc at South Korea’s Jeju International Airport, leading to the cancellation of over 50 flights and leaving thousands of travelers stranded. As of February 7, heavy winds and blizzards have forced airlines, including Korean Air, Air Seoul, Asiana, and Air Busan, to cancel flights, while others have experienced significant delays.
According to Korea Airport Service, 51 domestic flights and six international services were grounded due to the extreme weather conditions. Among the hardest-hit airlines, Korean Air canceled 23 flights, while Jin Air and Eastar Jet also saw significant disruptions with multiple cancellations and delays. Other carriers like Jeju Air and Asiana Airlines experienced fewer cancellations, but delays were widespread.
Authorities have activated emergency measures, including mobilizing ground crews and emergency teams to assist stranded passengers. Despite the disruptions, some flights have managed to depart and arrive, but with the storm’s intensity showing no sign of easing, more cancellations are expected as conditions worsen.
Jeju Island remains under wind and blizzard warnings, making takeoffs and landings particularly dangerous. Travelers are urged to stay informed and check for updates with airlines before heading to the airport.
In addition to the challenges at Jeju, other regional airports are also experiencing adverse weather, compounding the chaos. With more flights likely to be canceled, the situation remains fluid. The storm has already impacted around 15,000 passengers, and local authorities are working to restore order as soon as conditions allow.
As the storm continues, travelers are encouraged to make alternative arrangements and keep a close watch on real-time updates to avoid further disruptions.
