📍 Kabul, Afghanistan — A second earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, days after a powerful 6.0-magnitude quake devastated several provinces, killing at least 2,205 people and injuring 3,640, according to Taliban government officials.
The latest tremor, measured at 5.6 magnitude by the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center, hit the same region already reeling from widespread destruction. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the new quake caused additional damage or casualties.
Sunday’s earthquake, which struck near the border with Pakistan, leveled thousands of homes in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. Rescue operations remain underway, with emergency teams struggling to reach remote villages cut off by landslides and blocked roads. Survivors have reported mass graves being prepared in accordance with Islamic burial traditions.
The World Health Organization estimates over 12,000 people have been directly affected, with hospitals overwhelmed and aid delivery hampered by terrain and infrastructure damage. International agencies have called for urgent humanitarian support as aftershocks continue to shake the region.
