Sainsbury’s in Talks to Sell Argos to China’s JD.com

Business

British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has entered discussions with Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com regarding the potential sale of Argos, its general merchandise subsidiary. Sainsbury’s acquired Argos in 2016 for £1.1 billion ($1.5 billion) as part of a strategy to expand its non-food retail offering.

The talks signal a possible shift in Sainsbury’s business focus amid evolving market conditions and increased competition in the UK retail sector. JD.com, one of China’s largest online retailers, has been actively exploring international expansion opportunities.

No formal agreement has been announced, and both companies have yet to comment publicly on the progress of negotiations. The outcome could mark a significant development in cross-border retail investment and reshape Argos’s future in the global marketplace.
