Russian Drone Strikes Hit Ukrainian Train Station and Power Grid
Kyiv, 4 October 2025 — A wave of Russian drone strikes overnight has left at least 30 civilians wounded at a railway station in Ukraine’s Sumy region, while a separate barrage targeting energy infrastructure has cut power to over 50,000 households in Chernigiv, officials confirmed Saturday.
Train Station Attack in Shostka
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack on Shostka station, calling it “savage” and accusing Russia of deliberately targeting civilians. The station, located roughly 50 kilometers from the Russian border, was struck during morning operations, injuring both passengers and railway staff.
Images shared by Zelensky and local officials showed a passenger carriage engulfed in flames, with twisted metal and shattered windows. Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting victims to nearby hospitals and sheltering others on-site.
Power Grid Hit in Chernigiv
In a separate strike, Russian drones and missiles damaged energy facilities near Chernigiv, triggering widespread blackouts. Regional operator Chernihivoblenergo confirmed that approximately 50,000 households were affected. Fires broke out across the city, though officials have not yet detailed the full extent of the damage.
Strategic Escalation
The attacks are part of a broader Russian campaign targeting Ukraine’s rail and energy infrastructure, which Kyiv views as an attempt to weaponize winter by denying civilians access to heat and electricity. Ukrainian forces responded with drone strikes on a major oil refinery in Russia’s Leningrad region, continuing their strategy of retaliatory long-range attacks.
As the war enters its fourth winter, both sides appear to be intensifying efforts to cripple each other’s logistical and civilian support systems.
