EAST HARTFORD, CT — RTX Corporation announced Tuesday that its Pratt & Whitney division has been awarded a $2.8 billion modified contract by the U.S. Department of Defense to produce F135 engines for the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet program.

The contract covers Lot 18 production of engines for all three F-35 variants: conventional take-off and landing (CTOL), carrier variant (CV), and short take-off/vertical landing (STOVL). It also includes spare engines, modules, tooling, engineering services, and program management support.

Christopher K. Johnson, vice president of the F135 program at Pratt & Whitney, emphasized the engine’s role in maintaining air superiority. “The F135 engine delivers the power, safety, and reliability needed to support mission success for U.S. and allied forces,” he said.

To date, over 1,300 F135 engines have been delivered to 20 allied nations. The program supports more than 67,000 jobs across 240 U.S. suppliers and contributed over $9 billion to the U.S. economy in 2024.
