RSF Urges Venezuela to Address Disappearance of Media Activist Carlos Correa

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has called on Venezuelan authorities to urgently address the disappearance of Carlos Correa, a prominent media activist and leader of the organization Espacio Público. Correa, a vocal critic of the Venezuelan government’s suppression of press freedom, vanished on January 7 under suspicious circumstances following a meeting with colleagues about ongoing media violations.

RSF Latin America Director Artur Romeu expressed grave concern for Correa’s well-being, highlighting the risks to his physical and mental health, especially given his family’s concerns. Romeu urged Venezuelan authorities to reveal Correa’s whereabouts, ensure his access to medical care, and guarantee his safety.

Correa has long faced harassment for his outspoken opposition to government policies, with repeated attacks from officials over the past two decades. His most recent abduction occurred when a masked gunman allegedly abducted him in a manner similar to past arrests by state security forces. Correa’s family reported his disappearance to local authorities, but they claim the investigation has made little progress.

In response, human rights organizations, international governments, and local activists have demanded a transparent investigation and called for Correa’s safe return. Protests and vigils have been organized across Venezuela in solidarity with Correa. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has also expressed concern, emphasizing the importance of addressing the case.

RSF, alongside the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, has condemned Correa’s disappearance as an attempt to silence critics of the government. The Commission stated that such actions undermine both individual press freedom and society’s right to access information.

The Venezuelan government has remained silent on the matter, sparking fears of state involvement or neglect in Correa’s abduction. This incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by journalists in Venezuela, where independent media continues to be stifled through harassment, violence, and detention.

Despite significant international pressure, the Venezuelan authorities have yet to make an official statement on the case. RSF has reiterated its commitment to defending press freedom worldwide and stressed the importance of collective action to protect journalists in repressive environments like Venezuela.
