Arrive in New Jersey by first flying into Newark Liberty International Airport, which offers many international flight connections.
Here you can pick up your rental car and explore the state of New Jersey.
On our road trip journey across New Jersey, we visited: Jersey City, Sussex County, Atlantic City and Cape May for over a week.
New Jersey is a northeastern state within the US, offering over 130 miles of the Atlantic coastline.
Here is my travel guide to going on a road trip around the US state of New Jersey:
Start your road trip around New Jersey in Jersey City
Jersey City is located across from the Hudson River, offering stunning views looking out to Lower Manhattan, New York making it a perfect starting point for your road trip.
Head to NoHu Rooftop Bar & Restaurant for a late evening dinner.
This is a great spot for a bite to eat by the outdoor fire pits that offer fantastic views looking out over to Manhattan from Jersey City.
One great reason for wanting to stay in Jersey City, NJ is the hotels being more affordable compared to across the Hudson in Manhattan, NY.
One great example of a hotel is the Westin Jersey City Newport.
The hotel is located in a less quiet part of Jersey City and is much quieter than Manhattan, so you can get a proper night’s sleep with a brilliant view.
If you would like to head over to Manhattan, you can take the commuter ferry from Jersey City.
The trip from Harborside to the 39th Street Ferry Terminal in Midtown will take you about eight minutes, and the trip to the Battery Park Terminal will be completed in around six minutes.
This gives you a great reason to enjoy Jersey City and you can have the best of both worlds if you wish to visit New York too.
Wake up early in the morning and enjoy a sunrise overlooking Manhattan, then explore Jersey City and head for Breakfast at SAM A.M.
You won’t find many chained franchised establishments in Jersey City, mostly locally run businesses just like SAM A.M. that serve fantastic coffee in the morning and wonderful set breakfast menus for you to enjoy.
Jersey City is also home to the site of Empty Sky Memorial, Liberty State Park, where ferries embark for nearby Ellis Island, with its historic Immigration Museum, and the iconic Statue of Liberty (She’s a Jersey girl! as the locals like to point out).
You can also go to watch a New York Giants football game in Jersey City at the Met Life stadium which is located across the road from American Dream.
American Dream is a retail and entertainment complex which is home to a ski slope, ice rink, Nickelodeon Universe theme park with a rollercoaster, Dream Works Water Park and loads of dining and shopping options for you to choose from offering hours of entertainment for all ages.
Enjoy a senic drive and escape to Sussex county
For a unique part of New Jersey to explore on your road trip, head to Sussex county.
Here you will find the Grand Cascades Lodge one of Sussex county’s most popular resorts.
Enjoy a meal at the Grand Cascades Lodge’s restaurant, the Crystal Tavern.
I would highly recommend the steak paired with a glass of red from the wine cellar, located in the basement for an ultimate dining experience.
Make sure you don’t miss out on the unique wine cellar which is located in the basement, a special feature of the Grand Cascades Lodge worth exploring.
Try some of the many on-site activities such as axe throwing, forest bathing, swimming or a round of golf on the lodge’s golf course.
Explore Atlantic City, New Jersey
Stop off in Atlantic City on your road trip and stay at the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Centre Hotel for a great location with a short walk into town.
Make the most out of the tax-free shopping on offer across clothes and shoes available in New Jersey across the many shops at The Atlantic City Outlets stores.
Walk around The Orange Loop and Tennessee Avenue, two fun areas in Atlantic City with locally run shops, restaurants, bars and food trucks.
Head to Caesars Atlantic City Hotel and Casino and try your luck at the tables or slot machines. Then stop for Dinner at Nero’s Italian Steakhouse at Caesars, for an incredible selection of cocktails, steaks, Italian dishes and an incredible array of fresh seafood to choose from.
Walk along the Boardwalk, and take in Atlantic City during the day and night, be sure to stop off at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City to soak in the fun atmosphere and for the party animals, be sure to stop off at the fun Wild Wild West Casino that gets the party started.
Go on a trip around the Wheel ride located on the Steel Pier for some stunning views overlooking Atlantic City beaches from above.
Take a Dolphin Cruise with Atlantic City Cruises and head around the coastal bay to see if you can get lucky and spot wild dolphins out at sea on this exciting boat trip.
Be sure to stop off for Dinner at Chef Vola’s for an authentic Italian-American dining experience. Be sure to book in advance as tables are limited and fill up fast. I can highly recommend the vile parma and the homemade cheesecakes which are incredible!
End your road trip in the coastal town of Cape May
We end our road trip adventure across New Jersey in Cape May, which is known for its classic beaches, history and well-preserved Victorian buildings.
Why not start your trip in Cape May with a bird’s eye view of Cape May and go on a Parasailing adventure with East Coast Water Sports?
This will give you a fantastic observation of the Atlantic coastline.
Head for Lunch at the picturesque Cape May Winery, located on its very own vineyard.
Ideal location to sample a wide selection of locally produced Cape May Wines.
I highly recommend the on-site restaurant at Cape May Winery which offers a wonderful selection of lunch options that pair with the wines perfect. You have to try the different burger sliders on offer which are fantastic.
Stay at the Southern Mansion guesthouse, an incredible Cape May bed and breakfast experience.
This historic mansion, built in 1860, is surrounded by a stunning garden located in the heart of Cape May’s historic district.
It’s just a short walk to the best beaches, shops and restaurants in a coastal area.
Enjoy dinner at The Ebbitt Room, located within the Virginia Hotel.
The Ebbitt Room is one of Cape May’s traditional eating establishments with a strongly rooted farm-to-table approach featuring the freshest ingredients from their very own Beach Plum Farm.
The dining experience was incredible here whilst you enjoy the evening breeze and the delightful sound of the grand piano.
Go on an exploration with Revolution Rail Co, whilst you try a spot of Railbiking.
This fun excursion activity that is Railbiking allows riders to ride the railroad tracks and explore the outside in style.
this route will take riders from the heart of Cape May for a four-mile trip alongside The Nature Conservancy’s Garrett Family Preserve.
A fun way to explore the old Cape May railway track.
End your trip with Lunch at Sunset Grille where you can order fish and chips whilst enjoying the relaxing sound of the sea from Sunset Beach.
