Rams match most losses by defending champ in history on ‘MNF’

There goes Sean McVay’s “Chunky Soup” money.

The Los Angeles Rams (4-10) tied the 1999 Denver Broncos for most losses by a defending Super Bowl champion with its 24-12 loss to Green Bay Monday night.

That means we should only have a few more months of seeing McVay terrorize an office by throwing cans of soup at underpaid interns.

When the schedule was released, the Monday night game between Los Angeles and Green Bay (6-8) looked like a premier late-season showdown. The teams were two of the top five preseason favorites to win the Super Bowl. Instead, it was a lackluster affair that only provided drama for those who bet on the over/under of 40 before the game.

The two teams combined for 36 points, with the Packers running out the clock at the Rams’ 1-yard line. Bettors who put money on the teams combining for more than 40 points are certainly frustrated, but those who backed the Rams to repeat as Super Bowl champions accepted their fate months ago.

As disappointing as the Rams have been, they aren’t the biggest defending Super Bowl bust based on preseason odds.

Per Pro Football Reference, Denver (+500) had the second-best odds of winning the Super Bowl before the 1999 season and its over-under win total was 10.5 games.

The Broncos had to replace John Elway at QB, however, while the Rams began the season with Matthew Stafford returning. Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp and Jalen Ramsey also returned to the field, as did McVay on the sideline.

When all were healthy, the results paled in comparison to a season ago. Injuries showed how bare the cupboards are in Los Angeles and thanks to the team owing its first-round pick to Detroit as part of the Stafford trade, they will likely remain bare.

After all that Chunky Soup, it’s finally time for the Rams to kick the can.
