Quinbrook’s £100 Million Investment to Build UK’s First Multi-Energy Renewable Refuelling Hubs for Commercial Vehicles

Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners has committed £100 million to Aegis Energy to establish the UK’s first network of clean, multi-energy refuelling hubs. These hubs will play a crucial role in supporting the decarbonization of the UK’s transport sector, which is the largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the country.

The new hubs, scheduled to open by 2027, will offer high-speed electric vehicle (EV) charging alongside hydrogen, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and bio-CNG options. The facilities will cater to heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and vans, providing scalable refuelling solutions to support fleets transitioning to low-carbon energy sources.

Aegis Energy aims to launch an initial network of five refuelling stations in strategic locations across the UK, including Sheffield, Immingham, Warrington, Corby, and Towcester. Each station is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 14,300 tonnes annually, contributing to the UK’s climate goals.

Christopher Thorneycroft-Smith, co-founder of Aegis Energy, highlighted the importance of offering multiple clean energy options at public refuelling hubs, allowing fleet operators flexibility in how they transition to sustainable energy sources. The company’s long-term vision includes expanding the network to up to 30 hubs by 2030, helping to meet increasing regulatory pressure for zero-emission vehicles, with sales bans on non-zero emission vehicles set for 2035-2040.

The project aligns with Quinbrook’s broader strategy of investing in low-carbon infrastructure across its global portfolio, including the UK, US, and Australia. By filling a critical infrastructure gap, the investment supports the UK’s shift towards cleaner transportation, providing essential services for businesses as they adapt to evolving environmental standards.

This investment in Aegis Energy marks a significant step in building the UK’s sustainable transport ecosystem and further positions Quinbrook as a key player in advancing net-zero solutions in the global energy and transport sectors.
