President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump traveled to Kerrville, Texas on Friday to meet with families affected by the catastrophic July 4 flash floods, which have claimed at least 121 lives, including dozens of children at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp along the Guadalupe River.
The presidential visit comes amid ongoing search and rescue operations, with more than 160 people still missing across the region. The Trumps were joined by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, as they toured flood-damaged areas, met with grieving families, and thanked emergency responders.
President Trump, who approved a major disaster declaration earlier this week, described the flooding as a “once-in-every-200-year catastrophe”, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life and pledging swift federal support.
“It’s a terrible thing, but we’re going to be there with some of the great families and others, the governor, everybody,” Trump said before departing the White House.
The First Lady, dressed casually for the visit, expressed her condolences on social media, writing:
“My heart goes out to the parents in Texas during this difficult time. I am holding you in my thoughts and sending prayers for strength, comfort, and resilience”.
The visit also comes amid scrutiny of federal disaster response efforts and funding cuts to early warning systems. The White House has defended its handling of the crisis, with officials emphasizing the rapid deployment of federal resources and personnel.
Following their visit to Texas, the Trumps are scheduled to travel to Bedminster, New Jersey, where they will privately mark the one-year anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Trump and attend the Club World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium.
