Brasília, Brazil — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will host Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the capital city of Brasília on Sunday, August 24, 2025, as part of a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The visit follows an official invitation extended by President Lula and comes on the heels of President Tinubu’s participation in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Japan. The Nigerian delegation, which includes key ministers and senior government officials, is expected to engage in high-level discussions focused on trade, investment, and strategic cooperation.

Strengthening Brazil–Nigeria Relations

During the visit, both leaders will hold a bilateral meeting to explore opportunities for collaboration in areas such as energy transition, agriculture, infrastructure development, and technology. A business forum featuring Brazilian investors and Nigerian officials is also scheduled, with the aim of deepening commercial ties and facilitating new partnerships.

The two governments are expected to sign a series of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to formalize cooperation in sectors of mutual interest. Discussions will also touch on regional and global issues, including food security, climate resilience, and South–South cooperation.

Historical and Strategic Ties

Brazil and Nigeria share longstanding diplomatic and cultural ties, with both countries playing influential roles in their respective regions. The visit is seen as an opportunity to revitalize the Brazil–Nigeria Strategic Dialogue Mechanism and build on recent engagements, including Vice President Geraldo Alckmin’s mission to Abuja earlier this year.

President Tinubu has emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to agricultural reform and industrial growth, citing Brazil’s expertise in food production and research as a model for collaboration. President Lula, in turn, has pledged support for Nigeria’s development goals and reiterated his invitation for President Tinubu to participate in COP30, scheduled to take place in Belém, Brazil.

Outlook

The state visit is expected to yield tangible outcomes in trade, investment, and diplomatic engagement, reinforcing the importance of Brazil–Nigeria relations in a rapidly evolving global landscape. Both leaders have expressed optimism about the potential for expanded cooperation and shared development.
