Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Cyprus on Sunday, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the island nation. His visit, seen as a diplomatic milestone, comes ahead of the G7 Summit in Canada and reflects India’s renewed focus on deepening ties with European partners.
Upon arrival at Larnaca International Airport, Prime Minister Modi was received with a ceremonial welcome by President Nikos Christodoulides. Both Indian and Cypriot diplomatic sources have described the visit as a historic moment, underscoring the growing strategic engagement between the two nations.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold delegation-level discussions with President Christodoulides. The leaders are expected to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation in trade, investment, technology, defence, shipping, renewable energy, and cultural exchanges. Global and regional developments—including maritime security and the situation in West Asia—will also be key topics of discussion.
At the invitation of President Christodoulides, Prime Minister Modi is accompanied by a high-level delegation of approximately 100 officials.
Ahead of his arrival, the Indian diaspora in Cyprus expressed great enthusiasm over the visit. Although small in number, the Indian community plays a significant role in sectors such as education, healthcare, and business. Prime Minister Modi is expected to address and interact with community members, reinforcing India’s commitment to its global diaspora.
India and Cyprus have maintained strong diplomatic relations since establishing official ties in 1962. Cyprus has consistently supported India’s positions on key international matters, including those raised at the United Nations.
The visit is widely seen as part of India’s evolving foreign policy approach—one that seeks to build stronger partnerships with geopolitically significant but traditionally overlooked nations across Europe and the Mediterranean.
