PHILADELPHIA – Kavon Coleman, 23, of Philadelphia, has been sentenced to 121 months in federal prison and five years of supervised release for his role in an armed carjacking, announced U.S. Attorney David Metcalf of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Coleman was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Juan R. Sánchez after pleading guilty to carjacking, brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, and aiding and abetting.

The charges stem from a violent incident on February 17, 2022, when Coleman and an accomplice approached a woman sitting in her vehicle at 3300 Fairmount Avenue around 5 p.m. while she waited for a food order. The accomplice pointed a gun at the victim and demanded her keys. Coleman then entered the driver’s seat and drove away in her vehicle.

The next day, Coleman was involved in a high-speed chase with police while in another stolen vehicle. During the pursuit, he crashed into another car and discarded a ghost gun—a firearm with no serial number—before being apprehended.

Coleman was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 7, 2023, and pleaded guilty to all charges on July 9, 2024, just as jury selection was underway for his trial.

The case was investigated by the FBI, ATF, and Philadelphia Police Department as part of the Carjacking Task Force, launched in 2022 in response to a surge in violent carjackings across Philadelphia.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Katherine Shulman and Joseph LaBar prosecuted the case.
