It’s time to tap the brakes on the Sean Payton-to-Denver rumors because the former Saints HC may change his mind.
Per Saints Insider Jeff Duncan, Payton delayed his second interview with Denver and is meeting with Arizona on Thursday. Duncan also believes Payton’s return to Fox Sports is a possibility.
CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson reports the Broncos have not scheduled a second interview with any candidate. Perhaps Denver placed all eggs in the Payton basket, forgetting he has several opportunities.
Skepticism surrounding Russell Wilson diminishes the job’s appeal and could play a role in any second thoughts by Payton.
“Wilson’s production decline dates to the 2020 season, spanning multiple coaches and systems,” a league exec. told The Athletic’s Mike Sando.
Wilson’s sharp decline traces back to accuracy problems. Two years after Wilson posted a career-high 68.8 completion percentage, he recorded a career-low 60.5 percent in 15 games this season.
Payton values precise passers. Former Saints QB Drew Brees averaged a 68.8 completion percentage during 15 seasons with Payton.
Working with an older QB is also less attractive. Wilson is 34 years old, while Arizona’s Kyler Murray is 25. If Payton stays in TV and the Chargers fire HC Brandon Staley next year, they could become a top destination. Payton “really wants” to coach 24-year-old QB Justin Herbert via NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.
Consequently, Denver needs to consider other candidates like Dallas DC Dan Quinn or San Francisco DC DeMeco Ryans if Payton is no longer a possibility.
