Dutch Justice Minister David van Weel confirmed on Thursday that he had discussed the extradition of European cocaine kingpin Jos Leijdekkers with Sierra Leone’s Justice Minister Alpha Sesay. Leijdekkers, one of Europe’s most wanted fugitives, is believed to be in Sierra Leone, where he has reportedly received high-level protection.
Van Weel emphasized that Leijdekkers is wanted internationally for serious crimes, and there are strong indications that he is currently residing in Sierra Leone. The Dutch government has formally requested his extradition, although the Netherlands does not have an extradition treaty with Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone has acknowledged the investigation into Leijdekkers’ whereabouts and has pledged to cooperate if an official extradition request is made, according to Reuters.
This ongoing situation has drawn international attention, as Leijdekkers remains a key figure in Europe’s cocaine trafficking operations. The outcome of this extradition discussion could have significant implications for global drug enforcement efforts.
